Judy
Nolte Temple
has written two books about women's history and has edited two volumes of essays about Southwestern literature and culture. She is Associate Professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of Arizona. Temple is a past president of the Western Literature Association and in 2003 was a senior Fulbright scholar in New Zealand, where she studied missionary diaries. Her latest book is BabyDoe Tabor: The Madwoman in the Cabin.
Jeff
Knorr
is the
author of
the three books of
poetry, The Third Body (Cherry Grove Collections, 2007), Keeper
(Mammoth Books), and Standing Up to the Day (Pecan Grove Press). His
other works include the co-authored Mooring Against the Tide: Writing
Poetry and Fiction (Prentice Hall); the anthology, A Writer's Country
(Prentice Hall); and The River Sings: An Introduction to Poetry
(Prentice Hall). His poetry and essays have appeared in
numerous
literary journals and anthologies including Chelsea, Connecticut
Review, The Journal, Red Rock Review, Barrow Street, and Like Thunder:
Poets Respond to Violence in America (University of Iowa, 2002).
He currently directs the River City
Writer’s
Series at Sacramento City College and also serves on the Sacramento
Metropolitan Arts Commission’s Poet Laureate committee and is
professor of literature and creative writing at Sacramento City College.

an assistant English professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, is the recipient of the prestigious PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers for his debut work, “We’re in Trouble,” a collection of dramatic short stories.

Julia
Connor
is Sacramento Poet Laureate 2005-2008. She began her studies at the Poetics Program of New College of California in San Francisco at the age of forty. There, from 1981 to 1987, she studied with poets Robert Duncan, Diane di Prima, and David Meltzer. Since 1988, she has taught poetry in a wide variety of situations from Graduate MFA Programs such as Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics where she was on the faculty, to state prisons. She teaches poetry workshops for all levels of experience, which she has presented at places as diverse as Nathan Mayhew Seminars, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, and Emerson College, Sussex, England. Her honors include a Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission Literary Fellowship and a California Arts Council Literary Fellowship.
Gerald
W. Haslam
has published eight collections of short stories, including "That Constant Coyote" and "Condor Dreams". His 2005 publications include "Haslam's Valley" and "Workin' Man Blues: Country Music in California, 2nd edition". His other publications include "Straight White Male", "Jack London's Golden State: Selected Stories" and "Manuel and the Madman". A recipient of the Western Literature Association's Distinguished Achievement Award, Haslam is Professor Emeritus of English at Sonoma State University. The University of Nevada Press brought out his latest novel, "Grace Period," in 2006.
Peter
Grandbois'
first novel, The Gravedigger (Chronicle Books, 2006), was chosen for the “Original Voices” series by Borders and the “Discover Great New Writers” series by Barnes and Noble. His essays and short fiction have appeared in magazines such as: Boulevard, Post Road, Word Riot, The Dos Passos Review, and The Writer’s Chronicle, among others, and recently received an honorable mention for the 2007 Pushcart Prize. He was nominated for a Pen Translation Award for his translation of San Juan: Memoir of a City. He also serves as assistant editor for both StoryQuarterly and Narrative magazines and is a professor of creative writing and contemporary literature at California State University in Sacramento.
Pia Z. Ehrhardt's
stories have been widely published in magazines, including McSweeney's Quarterly, Mississippi Review, Oxford American, Narrative Magazine, and anthologized in Stories From The Blue Moon Café V and New Sudden Fiction: Short-Shorts From America And Beyond. Famous Fathers & Other Stories (MacAdam/Cage) is her debut short story collection. She is the recipient of the 2005 Narrative Prize and a Bread Loaf Fellowship. She lives in New Orleans - with her husband and teenage son - where she teaches at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
Each day is composed of three-hour Writers’ Workshops in the morning and lectures and time to explore in the afternoon. A field trip will be held on Saturday afternoon and closing remarks will be made later in the day. Sunday's schedule is set for final workshop sessions in the morning to accommodate early departures.
Conference fee: $429 per person. Does not include accommodations.
Meals: Two special dinners are included in the conference package. Friday evening there will be a spaghetti dinner and on Saturday a special Basque Barbecue by Danny the Basco. Breakfasts and lunches are not included.
The Surprise Valley Writers Conference is limited to a maximum of 50 participants.
