Plein Air Painters’ of America Signature Member Jean LeGassick will be instructing, demonstrating and painting en plein air at the second Surprise Valley Plein Air Painters Workshop & Conference Oct 3 - 6. Located in rural northeastern California, Surprise Valley is an undiscovered painters’ paradise.
The four-day schedule includes a half-day of instruction, three-and-a-half days painting in the field, dinner for three nights, evening programs including a keynote speech Friday night by Modoc Form co-founder Barbara March, and a Sunday morning wrap-up critique session.
Highlights of the area are mature cottonwood trees starting their fall color, ranches, old barns, views of the dramatic Warner Mountains to the west and across a dry lake bed to the Nevada ranges to the east, canyons, sage and blooming rabbit brush.
Conference headquarters are in Cedarville, California which is 25 minutes from Alturas. Cedarville is a town of 800 people. A favorite conference meeting place is Surprise Café, which has a free wi fi connection, good coffee, beer and wine and fresh healthy food.
There are two additional restaurants, an eclectic used bookstore, a wool weavers guild and not much else! Plenty of beautiful scenery, peace and quiet.
Participants will have ample time to paint, share their techniques, philosophies, and inspirations. Creativity is a universal theme, and the synergy between painting and other art forms will be explored on several levels. For example, how do you chose a title or what emotion or feeling inspires you to paint?
Fee: $475 for four-day conference includes Wednesday evening reception and three dinners. $200 for Thursday class only includes Thursday dinner. Breakfasts and lunches are not included.
Accommodations in Cedarville are limited, plan to book your reservation early. Rates range from $55 to $160 per night. For more information visit the accommodation page link below or contact the workshop coordinator Barbara March at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 530/ 279-2099.
